According to Anenih,  the North must reciprocate the gesture of the South-south in the  political empowerment of the North in the past.<br /><br />Jonathan, who arrived the Benin Airport at about 1pm, was welcomed  by Governor Adams Oshiomhole and members of the Edo State Executive  Council. The governor (Oshiomhole), though  he is not a PDP member appreciates that work. And we promise Nigerians  that we will improve on infrastructures. And if you observe carefully,  those who travel, you will know that the PDP administration has improved  the quality of our roads.<br /><br />“We cannot do all our roads the same day, but, within this short  time we have been in power, we have reconstructed the roads, we have  also fixed the airports. So when we talk about infrastructure, PDP is  not only talking about feeding people. There was somebody who said PDP  believes in stomach infrastructure. Yes because PDP must ensure food  security. Every President in this world talks about food security and  job creation.<br /><br />“ And we have been commended for reducing hunger, our detractors  don’t even want Nigerians to know that we are working, but those who  monitor what is happening in the world know that we are working.  Recently, we were recognized for fighting Ebola disease. So I promise  you that there must be food security and anybody who says that we should  not talk about food security is not ready to lead the people.<br /><br />“You are all aware that we have conquered Ebola and we will surely  crush Boko Haram. And if you look at what is happening, a lot of things  are changing. Everything is turning around”.<br /><br />‘ We will get all our states back’<br />Admonishing PDP members to be united ahead of the 2015 general  elections, the President said: “Let me appreciate the leadership of the  party for their commitment and members of our party from the non-PDP  states because we know the things they pass through. We are here in Edo  for a unity rally, we are not here for campaign, we are here for a unity  rally because we must bring our party members together especially now  that elections are coming.<br /><br />“This is South-south Unity Rally. Elections are coming and we have  different interests. We appeal to our people, from state to National  Assembly, that so many people will be interested in this position but  only one person will go. We belong to the same party, so when we are  struggling to get to this position, we must do it decently so that we  don’t create enemies amongst ourselves. If we don’t create enemies among  ourselves and we continue to unite, we will surely get all our states  back.<br /><br />“ At the beginning of 1999 when I took oath of office as Deputy  Governor, the entire South-south was PDP. But today Rivers and Edo are  no longer in PDP. But from 2015 to 2016 we will get all our states  back”. While welcoming Ikimi and other APC decampees to the PDP,  Jonathan assured that they will be given a level-playing field with old  members.<br /><br />“People like Ikimi left the PDP before due to internal crisis, but  they are back today. Now, we have corrected all the things that made  them leave the party. Every party member will be treated equally, no  discrimination, no imposition, no god father, no god mother. This is the  only party that will give you the freedom and the opportunity to plan  to the highest without any interference. Edo State will go to PDP.<br /><br />“ For Rivers State, we know that the only party there is PDP. Other  parties exist on bill boards, so allow their sign boards to stay, we  know the party that is controlling Rivers State. All what we need is  unity”.<br /><br />‘Interest of Nigeria’<br />On his part, Anenih, the PDP BoT Chairman, said the leadership of  the party in the South- south had endorsed Jonathan for second term, and  urged the North to support the bid in the interest of the nation.<br /><br />“Our brothers and sisters in the North, we have reasons to be part  of the contributions of the South-south zone to Nigeria’s development.  The zone has, over the years, made sacrifices, including supreme  sacrifices not only to keep this country together but also for economic  development,” he said.<br /><br />“ Our sons and daughters such as Chief Tony Enahoro, Chief Okotie  Eboh, Isaac Boro, Gen.David Ejoor, Chief Dennis Osadebey, Chief Marere  etc, have served this country with great dedication. In the political  history of Nigeria, the South-south has always been a close ally of the  North. We have fought political battles together. We have given support  to the North when it matters most. The current situation calls for  corporation, in appealing to the conscience of Nigerians, in the  prevailing circumstance, we must claim our right with dignity and  determination in the interest of our dear nation.<br /><br />“That is the message from the entire leadership of the South-south  to our brothers in the North, that we need their support day and night,  not only to win election also to win peace” .<br /><br />On his part, National Chairman of the party, Adamu Muazu, insisted  that Jonathan remained the candidate of the party, and challenged the  opposition APC that “rather than talk about who qualifies to be  President in our party, bring out your best and let us see how your  presidential candidate will emerge”.</div>

We did several tests including one for heart failure on the body. We have spent millions of naira on the project and we were  not in doubt that quality materials were used in the construction.<br /><br />“One worker was still trapped and we immediately ordered for earth  moving equipment from Onitsha to remove the rubble's to save his life.<br /><br />“We reported to the Police immediately and they helped us in the rescue  mission. Unfortunately, the man under the rubble died before he could be  rescued”, he added.<br /><br />He stated that the body of the<br />deceased had been deposited at St. Joseph’s Hospital mortuary at Adazi- Nnukwu.<br /><br />Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Uchenna Ezeh, who confirmed  the incident, said full investigation into the matter has commenced.</div>

The  love, kind words and support I’ve received in that period from, mostly,  total strangers have been overwhelming. I want to thank everybody who  saw the good in what I did. Though, to be honest, I think it was a  little stupid. What was I thinking putting my life and probably my  career on the line in an attempt to change something so entrenched it  seems unchangeable?  But really I’m not fazed by the trash talk from  those allergic to the truth.<br />It’s a long time coming and someone has to put the Big Ben on the fat cat, I guess.<br />During the same period I’ve also been insulted like never before.  I’ve been called the most uncomplimentary names and all the curses in  Deuteronomy hurled towards me. They should be ashamed that the brushed  ego of their spiritual Godfather meant more to them than the over 90  lives that perished under the rubble.<br />I can deal with the trash talk and name-calling. But I’m also not  naïve. I’ve made plans to evacuate my family to safety at the shortest  notice in case things escalate. I hope they don’t. But one can never be  so sure with these fundamentalists.<br />They said I’m an attention freak; that I published the audio clip  because I yearned to be a social media celebrity (whatever that means).  Well, I won’t lie; I enjoyed the 15 minutes of fame. I loved the thrill  of being in the eye of the storm. In case my accusers are reading this, I  got over 2,000 followers on twitter within the period. I don’t know  what to make of that yet. I’m not so sure about this Twitter thing but  if there’s a way I can convert that to money, that would be something.  Gbenga Olorunpomi, how much does one twitter follower exchange for a  dollar these days?<br />So why did I publish the audio?<br />I had recorded the audio six days before posting it on Twitter. To be  sincere, I didn’t think much of it until Saturday morning (I’d explain  later). I was intently watching the way the collapsed building was being  played out in the media after the rather disappointing way Lagos State  Governor, Babatunde Fashola, dodged reporters through a back door after  his private meeting with TB Joshua on September 14. I observed that  Nigerian media were being too gentle on TB Joshua despite the glaring  irregularities surrounding the collapse. I read more reports about the  “hovering craft” and how Boko Haram could’ve sabotaged the building and  other poppycock the televangelist wanted the world to believe.<br />Very little was reported about the structural defects of the  building. Not much was written about the fact that the building  originally had 2 floors and was being illegally refurbished with 4  additional floors when it collapsed. We didn’t come hard on the  Synagogue Church goons who attacked first responders. We didn’t  highlight the fact that many of those that perished could have been  saved if NEMA officials weren’t barred from the site for almost three  days! We didn’t make an issue of the fact that our colleagues who had  gone to report the collapsed building were molested on Saturday.<br />So when I woke up last Saturday morning and saw the picture of  Jonathan shaking hands with a grinning TB Joshua with headlines like  “Jonathan consoles TB Joshua,” I said damn it! I couldn’t stomach this  blatant impunity.<br />TB Joshua is perhaps the most powerful preacher in Africa and  politicians all over the continent fawn at him. But as watchdogs,  journalists must hold entrenched powers to account. If Nigerian  politicians didn’t realise that more than 90 lives had just perished  underneath a building without requisite permit and that those  responsible should be held accountable, then the responsibility falls on  journalists to force them to do the right thing.<br />Journalists shouldn’t be seen or heard telling the prime suspect they  would write “just like you said” after he offered to buy their  consciences with N50,000.<br />Some of the reporters who collected the N50,000 have called me after  the audio went viral to complain. They told me they have been getting  calls from colleagues and family members who recognised their voices in  the recording. One even accused me of a breach of trust. I told him I  didn’t sign a pact of silence with anybody. For me the decision was  between covering the ethical shortcomings of my colleagues or doing that  which is right to make sure those who died and their families get  justice. The decision was easy.<br />Why didn’t I publish the audio the same day I recorded it? Nigerian  journalists habitually ask for gratification at press conferences and  corporate events that it has unfortunately become a norm. Reporters  actually think you’re a fool if you turned down what they call “brown  envelope”. There are several excuses to justify it: “We’re poorly paid,”  “We have not been paid for months,” etc. Honestly, it’s hard to dismiss  some of these excuses sometimes. Nigerian Journalists are perhaps among  the worst paid in the world. This is where the Nigerian Union of  Journalist should do more. Its officials should stop paying courtesy  calls to politicians (of course, we know what exchanges hands during  these visits) and do more to force Jet-flying owners of media  organisations to pay reporters more and on time. We deserve it.<br />Journalists should also explore other related and legitimate means of  making money like researching, writing and editing reports for NGOs,  writing and editing of brochures and reports, working as fixers to  foreign journalists, blogging (I recently met a Nigerian television  reporter that make quite some money monthly from his blog), etc.<br />Like everything in Nigeria, this “brown envelope” thing has been  stretched beyond the limit of ridiculousness. I’d give some examples: On  August 15, 2010 a truck belonging to Dangote Sugar Refinery caused an  inferno at the Ojodu Bridge outside Otedola Estate in Lagos. More that  50 lives perished in the fire. An inquest was initiated by a  non-governmental organisation, Access to Justice and Human Rights  lawyer, Femi Falana. Please take a deep breath before reading the next  sentence. During the inquest, officials of Dangote Industries  distributed cartons of Spaghetti (and some money, probably to buy  ingredients) to court reporters at the Ikeja High Court to probably skew  their account of the hearing. In case you missed it let me repeat. Some  Nigerian Journalists collected packs of Spaghetti as bribes! Are we  that hungry? Some reporters got as little as 12 packs of spaghetti. My  friend, Ben Ezeamalu, was almost beaten up for speaking against it.<br />In fact, they erected a wall of hostility around themselves whenever he  came around. According to him, a very senior journalist pulled him aside  and told him it was easy for him to turn down the brown envelope  because he wasn’t married and had no school fees to pay.<br />Ben said his curiosity was aroused while he was researching for  material on the internet for an article he was writing days before the  coroner’s verdict on the inquest. To his surprise, there was very little  material for an inquest that involved Africa’s richest man and had  lasted 19 months! After the coroner delivered his verdict, in which he  indicted Dangote’s company as well as the Nigeria Police, the (short)  article was tucked away in a remote corner in almost all the newspapers  the next day. The fact that the coroner indicted Dangote was also  carefully left out in the articles.<br />Other journalists have tagged Ben “a spy” for consistently refusing to collect “brown envelopes”.<br />Nigerian journalists no longer know where to draw the line. A father  that lost his son during last Dana plane crash was forced to pay  journalists during his son’s wake-keep before it was reported. There are  more puke-inducing instances but I’d stop here.<br />For those of you saying N50,000 ($300) was too little to entice  Nigerian reporters, I’ve seen reporters scuffle over N2,000 ($12) during  a press conference.<br />During last year’s gubernatorial election in Ondo State, reporters  literally came to blows at Governor Mimiko’s home after the latter  released “appreciation money” for journalists who covered his polling  unit. The sharing formula was N10,000 per head, until the cash ran low  and the formula switched to N7,000. Cue bedlam. The governor’s PA,  looking on with contempt, threatened to evict them from his employer’s  residence if they failed to conduct themselves with decorum. One fellow  even started arranging for another group of journalists to go meet the  governor for another “appreciation money.”<br />Editors should also monitor their reporters too, but we all know that  some editors get theirs through subtler manner (Bank transfers).  I’m a  Nigerian journalist I want to change things the only way I know how to –  going public with it. I’m not saying anything new here, everybody who  has one thing or the other to do with journalists knows that these  things happen. Maybe I’m the first journalist to go public with it in  such a manner.<br />Corporate organisations and individuals should also stop offering  these bribes (I still insist that they are bribes and nothing else).  Journalist will report your events whether they like it or not. They  want to stay in business. My heart skips anytime I get a call from my  editor or receive that email with a subject that reads: “Pending  stories”. I know I’m required to deliver. I don’t need that “brown  envelope” to turn around that copy. I know in the Punch for instance,  reporters are required to fill a certain number of pages every week.  They can’t sit around waiting for “money to fuel your cars” to write  stories to fill those pages. The threat of losing one of the most  lucrative jobs in the industry is enough “inducement”. But the truth is  most pressers aren’t news worthy so PR officials feel they need to  induce reporters to write about them.<br />And for the fundamentalist followers of TB Joshua, this isn’t about  your spiritual Godfather. I would still have gone public with this if  the Pope was involved. I can’t say I’m sorry that his ego was bruised.  He clearly meant for the money to influence the reporting of the event.  “So what are you going to write?” He had asked. That makes it a bribe.  Simple. I can’t help you if you couldn’t decipher that. I’m a reporter  not a brain surgeon.<br /><div style="text-align: left;">This is the last I’m going to say on this issue unless something drastic happens. <div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1LIYTrgCwig5IzLNiG8uP1UN1g6MlVL6AL0Twcre-4AbduYObg3wqJdHXyktNZLTl_oj7UVDOfJnMMaqeNUl_31yw4Tv8JBiVhHrsyibXE0YGDlA79_li9YNDN6Vko_8KNvMGzMDJejNy/s1600/ebola_micrograph_virus-photo-300x180.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="384" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1LIYTrgCwig5IzLNiG8uP1UN1g6MlVL6AL0Twcre-4AbduYObg3wqJdHXyktNZLTl_oj7UVDOfJnMMaqeNUl_31yw4Tv8JBiVhHrsyibXE0YGDlA79_li9YNDN6Vko_8KNvMGzMDJejNy/s1600/ebola_micrograph_virus-photo-300x180.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />The number of Ebola infections is set to explode unless the response  is radically intensified, the WHO (world Health Organization) warned on  Tuesday, predicting tens of thousands of cases by the end of the year.<br />The UN agency said in a report that new cases would increase from  hundreds each week to thousands without “drastic improvements in control  measures”, with infections more than tripling to 20,000 by November.<br />“We’ve rather modestly only extended the projections to November 2,  but if you go to… January 2, you’re into hundreds of thousands,” said  Christopher Dye, the head of strategy at the World Health Organization  and a co-author of the study. <br />The research paper warns that the outbreak could drag out for years  and become entrenched in west Africa, which has already seen almost  3,000 deaths.<br />The epidemic might simply “rumble on as it has for the last few  months for the next few years,” Dye said, stressing that “the fear is  that Ebola will become more or less a permanent feature of the human  population”.<br />Liberia, the hardest-hit nation, has seen 3,000 cases and almost  1,600 deaths, with health workers turning people away from treatment  units due to chronic shortages of beds and staff.<br />The country has some 150 foreign specialized medical workers on the  ground and needs at least 600, and it is aiming to scale its current 400  Ebola beds up to around 2,000 within weeks.<br />Its response has been bolstered by a US military mission, already  deploying, which will see 3,000 troops providing training and logistics.<br />– ‘Remedy an earthquake’<br />But Antonio Vigilante, UN deputy special representative for recovery  and governance, likened the struggle to “trying to remedy an earthquake  when it is happening”.<br />Liberia said Tuesday the slow international response risked allowing  the country to slide back into civil war alongside neighboring Sierra  Leone, and could reignite civil unrest in Guinea.<br />“The world cannot wait for Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea to slip  back into conflict, which could be the result of this slowness in  response,” Information Minister Lewis Brown told AFP late Monday.<br />Sierra Leone, where more than 1,800 have been infected and nearly 600  have died, reported “an overflow of bodies” after a nationwide curfew  helped uncover more than 200 new cases.<br />The WHO study, carried out with Imperial College London, forecast  that, if no significant action were taken, the cumulative number of  confirmed and probable cases by November 2 would be around 6,000 in  Guinea, 10,000 in Liberia and 5,000 in Sierra Leone.<br />Higher infection rates would translate into a jump in the number of  deaths as the experts suggested the real fatality rate was much higher  than the widely estimated one in two, said the study published in the  New England Journal of Medicine.<br />If only cases of deaths and recovery are taken into account, the real  fatality rate stands at about 71 percent, the study showed.<br />“We are seeing exponential growth and we need to act now,” Dye said.<br />The United Nations is seeking to raise nearly $1 billion to defeat  the Ebola outbreak, the worst ever recorded, which the Security Council  has declared a threat to world peace.<br />– Virus mutation –<br />Ebola fever can fell its victims within days, causing severe muscle  pain, vomiting, diarrhoea and — in many cases — unstoppable internal and  external bleeding. It is one of the deadliest viruses known to man.<br />The current crisis, which quietly began in southern Guinea last  December, has killed far more than all other Ebola outbreaks combined.<br />Dye said that while the virus ravaging west Africa was acting  similarly to previous outbreaks, what has changed is the density and  mobility of the population affected.<br />Cultural practices like washing and touching dead bodies have  compounded the problem, as has the very slow response in countries never  before hit by the virus and by the international community, he said.<br />Weak health systems in the hardest-hit countries are also largely to  blame, said Christi Donnell, a professor of statistical epidemiology at  the Imperial College and a co-author of the study.<br />“In Nigeria, for example, where health systems are stronger, the  number of cases has so far been limited, despite the introduction of  infection into the large cities of Lagos and Port Harcourt,” she said.<br />Ebola is only transmitted through contact with body fluids, so halting its spread is usually relatively simple.<br />Even in this epidemic, each Ebola patient on average infects only 1.7  people in Guinea, 1.8 in Liberia and two in Sierra Leone, the study  showed.<br />“If it were an airborne transmitted disease… we would be in much bigger trouble than we are at the moment,” Dye said.<br />“It is possible,” he said, that the disease could mutate to be more  easily transmitted through the air, but “we certainly haven’t see that  yet”.</div>
